Dubbo is the largest city in the central west of New South Wales. With a population of over 120,000 people it is now the hub of agricultural and tourism industries for the region. It has a lot to offer in both areas. Dubbo lies at the intersection of five major highways. The Newell Highway runs north to Goondiwindi in Queensland and south to Parkes and Forbes. The Golden Highway runs west to the Hunter Valley and the Mitchell Highway runs south east to Orange and Bathurst and west to Broken Hill. Large amounts of traffic pass through Dubbo and it is a popular stopover for organised tours and campervan and motorhome people travelling throughout the state.

Dubbo,s best known attraction is the Western Plains Zoo. This is a world standard zoo with the animals roaming in their natural state in large enclosures rather than cages. It has some truly magnificent displays and it is a place to take the family for the whole day. Right in the center of the city, you will find the old Dubbo jail. This is a must see attraction. In the surrounding countryside there are also many other attractions to take the family. To the south near Parkes is the giant radio telescope that beamed the sounds of the moon landing to the world and was the star of the movie “The Dish” To the north is the beautiful Warambungle ranges national Park and the stellar observatories which you can visit. The Wellington Caves are only a half hours drive and Mt Panorama motor racing circuit is just near Bathurst. You can also take a day trip to the wine growing region around Mudgee and try out the local drop.

With so much to do in the region and so many visitors coming through Dubbo it follows that Dubbo has developed a large accommodation industry. There is plenty on offer. Mostly it is in hotel and motel style configurations and there are many to choose from. At night you can take your choice of restaurants and the licensed clubs and hotels nearly all serve excellent meals and provide great entertainment. The shopping in the area leaves nothing to be desired and the main CBD has plenty to choose from. Dubbo also has several local suburban shopping malls.
